Goals

Modeling Systems plays an important role in todays software development and evolution. Modeling provides goal-oriented abstractions in all phases of software development, which requires deep knowledge on modeling techniques and broad experiences in applying these techniques. Today, Software Engineering is supported by various modeling techniques, providing modeling languages, modeling language definition technologies, and model transformation technologies. Industry and academia successfully realized expressive modeling and meta modeling languages and mature tools for the practical application.

The Educators' Symposium at MODELS focusses on discussing teaching these technologies to software engineers at universities and software industries. Although most computer science curricula include some education in modeling technologies and therefore provide the basic building blocks for modeling, meta modeling, and model transformation, the whole spectrum of modeling in software engineering is rarely captured.

Scope

We encourage papers on the following specific topics:

  • Approaches used to integrate modeling into the software engineering curricula in academia.
  • Approaches used to train practitioners on using modeling techniques in industry.
  • Studies that assess the approaches used to integrate MDD into existing software engineering curricula.
  • Comparative studies of the tools (e.g., Software Architect, Eclipse UML2, StarUML, Altova Umodel) used to support modeling in academia.
  • Impact of modeling on students’ ability to think abstractly.
  • Industry’s assessment of the MDD training done in academia.
  • Experiences in teaching the specification and application of domain specific languages
  • Experiences in teaching meta modeling approaches and tools

We also encourage papers on the following general topics:

  • Introducing modeling early in the CS curriculum.
  • Approaches to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching modeling techniques.
  • Case studies that support teaching modeling techniques.
  • Using good modeling practices in teaching modeling techniques
  • Integrating modeling and MDD into the software engineering curriculum (how do they fit)

Participants

We invite contributions from instructors, researchers, and practitioners from both, academia and industry interested in modeling education and using modeling in software engineering training.

Activities

The symposium will consist of long paper presentations, short paper presentations and a panel discussion. We expect the short paper presentations to be ongoing research where interested symposium participants may get involved in the research activities.

Types of Contributions

Full Papers contribute research papers and experience reports in line with the topics of the 7th Educators' Symposium @ MODELS 2011. They present contributions in the field of MDD education or the use of models in software engineering education and training. Full papers are encouraged to have an experimental section or a case study to evaluate the effectiveness of the research or the presented class room experiences.

Full papers will be reviewed by at least three members of the program committee. Accepted full papers will be presented at the 7th Educators' Symposium @ MODELS 2011 on October 18, 2011 and published in the EduSymp-11-Postproceedings issued at the Electronic Communications of the EASST.

Full paper submissions, not exceeding 10 pages, conforming to the EC-EASST-submission guidelines, should be uploaded electronically in PDF format via Easychair not later than July 15, 2011.

Short Papers present position statements on modeling education and experiences, addressing the symposiums topics. These papers intend to stimulate discussions on teaching modeling at universities and in industries.

Short papers will be reviewed by at least three members of the program committee. Accepted short papers will be presented at the 7th Educators' Symposium @ MODELS 2011 on October 18, 2011. Authors of accepted short papers will be invited to submit a reworked full (10 pages) paper version to be included to the EduSymp-11-Postproceedings issued at the Electronic Communications of the EASST after a 2nd reviewing process.

Short paper submissions, not exceeding 4 pages, conforming to the EC-EASST-submission guidelines, should be uploaded electronically in PDF format via Easychair not later than July 15, 2011.

All papers and reviews are accessible to all PC members (exempt those reporting a conflict of interest) to facilitate a comprehensive and open minded online decision on paper acceptance.

Papers for the symposium will be selected based on the novelty of the ideas or solutions, the impact of modeling during software development education, and relevance to the topics for the symposium.

Publication

Postproceedings of the 7th Educators' Symposium @ MODELS 2011 will be published in the Electronic Communications of the EASST with an ISSN.

Extended versions of the two best papers will be published within the MODELS Satellite Proceedings (Springer LNCS).
